How Does the Vehicle Appraisal Process Work?

Find Out What Your Vehicle Is Really Worth
Thinking about trading or selling your car, truck, or SUV? At Steele GMC Round Rock, we believe you should understand not only what your vehicle is worth, but where that value comes from. A professional vehicle appraisal isn't just a number pulled from a website. We evaluate your actual vehicle, its condition, history, mileage, equipment, and current market demand to determine a real-world value.

Where Does Your Vehicle's Value Come From?
There isn't one single number or website that determines what a vehicle is worth. Your appraisal is based on several factors working together:
Your Vehicle
Year • Make • Model • Trim • Equipment • Mileage
Your Vehicle's Condition
Exterior • Interior • Mechanical Condition • Vehicle History
The Current Market
Local Demand • Comparable Vehicles • Supply • Wholesale Market Activity
Reconditioning
Inspection • Maintenance • Tires • Brakes • Repairs • Detailing
Together, these factors help us determine what your vehicle is worth in today's market.
How the Appraisal Process Works
1. We Identify Your Exact Vehicle
We start by confirming exactly what we're appraising. That includes your vehicle's:
  • Year, make and model
  • Trim level
  • Engine and drivetrain
  • Mileage
  • Factory equipment
  • Packages and options
  • Vehicle history
Two vehicles that look nearly identical can have very different values depending on mileage, equipment, condition, and history.
2. We Inspect Your Vehicle
Next, we look at the actual condition of your vehicle.
  • Exterior: We evaluate the body, paint, glass, wheels, tires, lights, trim, dents, scratches, and signs of previous repairs.
  • Interior: We look at the seats, carpeting, dashboard, electronics, infotainment system, controls, stains, odors, and general wear.
  • Mechanical Condition: Mileage, maintenance needs, warning lights, tires, brakes, drivability, and other mechanical considerations may all affect value.
  • Condition matters: A well-maintained vehicle may be worth more than an otherwise identical vehicle requiring significant repairs.
3. We Review Vehicle History
Your vehicle's history can also influence its market value. We may consider:
  • Accident history
  • Previous damage
  • Number of owners
  • Service history
  • Title history
  • Commercial or rental use
  • Reported mileage history
An accident doesn't automatically mean a vehicle has little value. The type of damage, severity, repair quality, and current condition all matter.
4. We Look at Today's Market
This is one of the most important parts of the appraisal. We look at what comparable vehicles are doing in the current marketplace, including:
  • Similar vehicles currently for sale
  • Recent wholesale market activity
  • Local and regional demand
  • Current inventory levels
  • Mileage differences
  • Trim and equipment
  • Seasonal demand
  • How desirable the vehicle is right now
A hard-to-find truck or SUV with strong local demand may perform differently from a vehicle with hundreds of similar examples available.

Your appraisal reflects the market today - not what the vehicle was worth six months ago.
5. We Estimate Reconditioning
When a dealership purchases or accepts a vehicle on trade, the investment usually doesn't end with the purchase price. Before that vehicle can become retail-ready, it may require:
  • Mechanical inspection
  • Maintenance
  • Tires
  • Brakes
  • Windshield repair
  • Paintless dent repair
  • Cosmetic repairs
  • Wheel repair
  • Interior repair
  • Professional detailing
  • Other safety or mechanical repairs
Those anticipated costs are considered when determining an appropriate appraisal value.

Why Doesn't My Appraisal Match an Online Trade-In Value?

Online valuation tools can be useful when researching your vehicle's potential value. But they're still estimates.

An online calculator generally hasn't physically inspected your vehicle. It may not know its exact condition, equipment, history, previous repairs, tire condition, mechanical needs, or current local demand. That's why an online estimate and a professional appraisal may be different.

An Online Tool Estimates a Vehicle. We Appraise Your Vehicle.

Let our team evaluate the actual vehicle and today's market.

Trade-In Value vs. Retail Price

A common question is:
"If you're offering me this amount for my trade, why is a similar vehicle listed online for more?"

Trade value and retail price represent two different stages of the vehicle. After acquiring a pre-owned vehicle, a dealership may invest in inspection, maintenance, repairs, tires, brakes, cosmetic work, detailing, transportation, marketing, and other costs required to prepare it for its next owner.

The vehicle then has to be priced competitively within the current retail market. That's why comparing a trade-in appraisal directly with the advertised price of a retail-ready vehicle isn't necessarily an apples-to-apples comparison.

Still Making Payments? That's Okay.

You don't need to have your vehicle paid off to trade it. Your vehicle's market value and your loan balance are two separate numbers.

Positive Equity
If your vehicle is worth $30,000 and you owe $20,000, you have approximately $10,000 in positive equity.

Negative Equity
If your vehicle is worth $25,000 and you owe $30,000, there is approximately $5,000 in negative equity.

Our team can help you understand your payoff, your vehicle's value, and how those numbers may affect your next purchase.
Should I Fix My Vehicle Before Trading It?
Not necessarily. Before spending hundreds or thousands of dollars repairing your vehicle, consider having it appraised first.

The amount you spend repairing something doesn't always translate dollar-for-dollar into additional trade value. Sometimes it makes more sense to let us evaluate the vehicle exactly as it sits.
Do Modifications Increase Trade-In Value?
Sometimes - but not always. Wheels, suspension upgrades, running boards, bed covers, audio systems, lighting, and other accessories can make a vehicle more desirable to certain buyers.

However, spending $3,000 on an accessory doesn't necessarily add $3,000 to your vehicle's value. We consider the quality, condition, desirability, and market appeal of modifications during the appraisal.

Vehicle Appraisal FAQs

Trade-in value is generally determined using the vehicle's year, make, model, trim, mileage, equipment, condition, history, current market demand, comparable vehicles, wholesale market information, and anticipated reconditioning costs.
There isn't one single source. Your appraisal combines information about your actual vehicle with current local, regional, retail, and wholesale market conditions.
Yes. Mileage is an important factor, but it isn't the only one. Condition, maintenance, history, equipment, age, and market demand can also influence value.
It can. The effect depends on the severity and type of damage, quality of repairs, vehicle condition, and how the vehicle compares with similar vehicles.
No. An online valuation is generally an estimate based on supplied information and market data. A professional appraisal allows us to evaluate the actual vehicle and its current condition.
Yes. Vehicles with outstanding loans are traded every day. Your current payoff can be compared with the vehicle's appraised value to determine whether you have positive or negative equity.
You don't need to professionally detail it. Our appraisers understand the difference between a vehicle that needs cleaning and one that requires actual reconditioning.
Not necessarily. Consider getting an appraisal before paying for major repairs. The cost of a repair may be greater than the additional trade value it creates.
Vehicle values change with mileage, condition, supply, demand, inventory, seasonality, and overall market conditions. An appraisal should be considered an assessment of your vehicle's value in the current market.
